The standard for energy efficiency in commercial buildings, (ASHRAE 90.1-2010) has set a goal challenging owners and designers to save 30% on lighting costs. To help become more energy efficient and save dollars, here are three quick ideas:

Incorporate automatic day lighting controls into your existing systems. It's quite possible, even in recently constructed buildings, to find areas where using daylight to minimize electrical usage makes sense.
Look at your parking garage, (or parking lot), and see if you are turning those lights off when no one is at work (but don't forget some lighting for security).
Check light levels throughout the building. Lighting Power Density maximums can be found in the ASHRAE standard. These densities are expressed in watts of electrical energy usage per square foot for lighting. Monitoring these densities is the first step towards watching your lighting costs.
